Two small forms huddled in the rain, waiting.

They were both rather new to Tao, having come after hearing of the recent disaster and eager to help. But the village hadn't looked that bad, although the signs of  the recent disaster were evident to anyone who took the time to look beneath the surface.

“Do you think they still need our help Nara?” The larger of the two forms, although he was not larger  by much, shook the rain out of his feathers. It didn't help, and within a few seconds the shiny Torchic was once again covered with rain.

“Hmmm?” For a few seconds after replying the Nidoran didn't move, her gaze focused intently upon the door. Then her companions words sunk in, and she lifted her head to gaze at him. “Oh... Oh, of course they will Brenne.” Nara nodded resolutely, “We passed lots of Pokemon working in the woods on the way in. There'll definitely be something you can help with.” She lapsed into silence, her gaze returning to the door.

Brenne hesitated, but ultimately said nothing and settled back down into a comfortable position. After another long wait, Nara's attempt to intimidate the door into opening using only her gaze having absolutely no effect whatsoever,  Brenne spoke up again.

“Are you sure that we have the right house? We had such trouble finding it in the first place, maybe--”

Nara cut him off. “Of course this is the right house! I told you, there's no other house it can be.” She snorted angrily before continuing, “It's late enough, he should be home already. Maybe he just didn't hear us the first time” She strode up to the door and knocked loudly. She only managed to knock once before the door was thrown open to reveal an unusual Ninetales.

“Come in, come in! My goodness, come in! I can’t believe you’ve all been waiting outside in the rain all this time! You could have knocked earlier, you know!”

Nara gaped indignantly. “We did! We've been waiting forever. Do you know how hard it is to get mud out of your feathers?”

Brenne, sensing that Nara was about to stalk off, quickly hustled her inside.

The Ninetales seemed oblivious to Nara's outrage. “My name is Callahan, or Calla, for short. I’m the guild registrar, you know. I’m quite good at it! Oh, please allow me to take your belongings; they’re all wet!”

Nara jerked away from Callahan as he came towards her. “My own body heat should be able to dry it out just fine, thank you”

“Nonsense, I’ll just hang them in front of the fireplace to dry as we go over the formalities. Don’t forget to take them when we’re done! You wouldn’t believe how many people leave their accessories here with me! (Please don’t do that, I have so many things cluttering up my attic in dusty old boxes..)”

Nara glared at Callahan's back as he whisked off the orange bandanna that was covering her horn.

“And the paperwork, of course! There will be a lot of that, don’t you worry one bit! You do have the forms that we’ve mailed you filled out, yes? That does always make things go much quicker here.”

“Ah, no. You see, we only got into Tao today. The Kecleon told us to come here when we were paying for our rooms. She said we need to register if we want to help 'mons, which is why we're here.” Brenne decided to take over the conversation. He didn't trust Nara to not say something stupid, or insulting, or to try and set something on fire if she thought she could get away with it. (It didn't matter that that attack didn't work the way she thought it did; she'd try it anyway if the Ninetales annoyed her enough. He didn't want to get beaten up on his first day in Tao because of Nara's stupidity.)

“Goodness, really? We’re in for a lot more paperwork than I could have hoped to dream of! No matter, I have spare forms, and all the time in the world! I trust you have no pressing appointments yet, so I’ll write down your information now. With your help, of course.”

“Well, it is quite late. How long wi--”

The Ninetales cut Brenne off “Let’s get right down to it, shall we? My fastest time for entering a team in the official guild registrar is a touch under a few hours; let’s see if we can break the record!

All right now.. names, please?”

Brenne sagged. A few hours! They'd already been on the road all day and he was bone tired.

Luckily Nara answered before the silence stretched on for too long. “I'm Nara, and my shiny friend is Brenne”

Ahh.. what.. commo- er, good names you all have! How do you spell them?

Nara twitched one ear "Simple. Nara, N-A-R-A. And B-R-E-N-N-E.” She said the words slowly and deliberately, and Brenne flinched. Nara was surely going to get them thrown out.

But the Ninetales hadn't seemed to notice. “Interesting spelling! Are you foreign? French, perhaps?”

Nara and Brenne looked at one another in confusion.

“I'm not sure I understand? We're from near the Humming Oasis, if that's what you meant.” Brenne chose his words carefully. Maybe the Ninetales had noticed Nara's disrespectful attitude after all. The idea that the Ninetales was making fun of them was only strengthened by his next words.

“Ah, no, forget it, France is just made up here, you know. Often used as comic relief. Er, just forget that.

Moving on!

What alias do you wish to give you lot of fellows? I hope it’s something good! I’ve been so bored by Pokemon insisting to use a name like “Team Awesome” or anything of the sort. More like “Team Mediocrity,” I like to think! I’m sure you have a much more original name.”

Nara perked up. “We're Team Torchic Blast, because we're two awesome Torchic's on a miss--”

Callahan cut her off. “I knew you wouldn’t let me down! Is that the normal spelling, or do you insist on losing letters, or replacing them altogether entirely? (I hope not..)

“Normal spelling” The Nidoran almost growled.

“And.. done. All right! Next topic!

You there, lad! You seem to be the leader of the team, here. Why don’t you tell me about yourself? Please make it interesting! I’m not filing a police report, you know. I don’t get paid for this, either. I do it for the stories people tell! Everyone has a story! (Some are better than others, though. That’s for sure..) However, I do hope yours isn’t filled to the brim with angst and darkness, you know. We have enough of that as it is with the recent crises we’ve been going through!

If you insist on weaving a yarn of incredible sadness and general malaise, please make it good. I’ll discern the necessary details from your story and put it down in the log book here.”

“Oh no, not me. I'm not the leader.” Brenne shook his frantically and winced. Nara was rather touchy about subjects like that.

“I'm the leader, you rude old--”

“Nara!”

“Of course, of course, how silly of me. I should have noticed that right away. Please, tell me your intriguing tale”

“Once upon a time there was an adorably strong Torchic who kicked a stupid, scruffy Ninetales a--”

“Nara! Stop it! We are going to join the Rescuers, and he's the only one who can help us! You are not going to ruin this for me!”

Nara paused for a few breaths, staring at Brenne, before slowly dropping her gaze. “I'm sorry Brenne.”

She sighed, then started to tell her story.

“My history is nothing special; I was the fifth Torchic from a family of seven. We grew up in the plains between the Windswept Woods and the Humming Oasis. But family life is boring, especially when your parents don't love you and you get blamed for everything, so I left. I stayed at the Humming Oasis for a while, met Brenne there, and then we decided to travel to Alomomola City. There's better prospects there, especially since Brenne isn't very strong yet.”

Brenne snorted, but didn't bother to interrupt.

“We lived there for about a year, doing odd jobs and earning money, until Brenne heard about the disaster in Tao and wanted to help out, so here we are.”

“What an enchanting tale! I can see why you’d probably like to join the Merchants.”

“What? No! I don't want to be a Merchant! I want to help pokemon! I'm going to be a Rescuer!”

“My Apologies, lad. And what is your story? Your leader has done an excellent job of keeping me awake at this late hour, I hope you do the same!

“Oh, err... Well, I was born near Humming Oasis. It's pretty rough there, survival of the fittest and all that. It's always seemed so heartless to me, so I try to help out any other 'mons I can, especially if they're hurt. Mum always said I was too soft.” His smile was tinged with sadness, “I do miss her, but I made my choice. You see, there was a drought a few years back. It lasted for ages – all our food died or left, and it was really hard to find water, so we decided that it was better if we moved to the Oasis for a while. They have more food, and a stable source of water, and can get in supplies from other places if things got too bad. It was 18 months before the drought broke. What a flood that was! I nearly got washed away. Anyway, after that mum said that we'd be able to live out in the wilds again, but I'd got a taste of civilization and I didn't want to go back. We had a big row over it, but in the end I was old enough to make my own decisions so I decided to stay. It was shortly after that I met Nara, and well you know the rest.”

“Very well, then! It seems I have all I need in order to register you here in our peaceful Tao Village! If during your travels you decide to recruit or add on an extra member to your team, please have them visit me and fill out the necessary info at the top.

I don’t think I’ll keep you here any longer, I have everything I need from you! I haven’t broken any records for time tonight, though. Your story took up quite a bit of it! (Thankfully, it didn’t put me to sleep.. it’s happened before). Time to conclude our business here!”

I want to get back into PMD-E again, so here's a new team. I still want to continue on with Anise & Nem's story, but we'll see how that pans out.

The image is an old drawing I did of Nara last year (she doesn't have the feathers in her bandanna/headband atm. Nara also has some... issues regarding her species. I will probably make that more clear whenever I get around to writing her.

EDIT: Changed my rank down to Farfetch'd, redid Brenne's history as I wasn't happy with his previous one, and also changed their moves, as I didn't like the previous way I'd calculted their moves (pick a level that they would be, and then choose moves on or below that level. I think it was also because I was starting to think of them as older/stronger than I'd originally envisioned them)
